Equipment
Requirements
Everything you need to know about the hardware required for your HyperConnect service.
NBN Equipment
NBN equipment requirements vary depending on your connection type. We'll help identify what you need during the sign-up process.
Bring Your Own Router
HyperConnect NBN services are BYO router. You can use any compatible router you already own, or purchase one separately. We don't charge for router rental because we believe you should own your equipment and have the flexibility to choose what works best for your home.
FTTP
Fibre to the Premises
NBN Equipment (Already Installed)
- NBN Connection Box (NTD) with UNI-D Ethernet ports
You Need
- Router with WAN Ethernet port (2.5GbE for speeds over 1Gbps)
- Ethernet cable (usually included with router)
FTTP supports speeds up to 2Gbps. Connect your router directly to the NBN box with an Ethernet cable.
HFC
Hybrid Fibre Coaxial
NBN Equipment (Already Installed)
- NBN Connection Box connected to coaxial cable
You Need
- Router with WAN Ethernet port (2.5GbE for speeds over 1Gbps)
- Ethernet cable to connect to NBN box
HFC supports speeds up to 2Gbps. Uses upgraded cable infrastructure with excellent performance.
FTTC
Fibre to the Curb
NBN Equipment (Already Installed)
- NCD (Network Connection Device) plugged into phone socket
You Need
- Any router with a WAN Ethernet port
- Ethernet cable to connect router to NCD
The NCD converts the signal from the street pit to Ethernet. Speeds typically up to 100Mbps.
FTTN / FTTB
Fibre to Node/Building
NBN Equipment
- None at premises - uses existing phone line
You Need
- VDSL2 compatible modem/router
- Phone cable (RJ11) to connect to wall socket
- Central filter (if keeping landline phone)
Your router must have a built-in VDSL2 modem. Not all routers have this - check before buying.
Fixed Wireless
Outdoor Antenna Connection
NBN Equipment (Installed by NBN)
- Outdoor antenna mounted on roof/wall
- Indoor connection unit with Ethernet port
You Need
- Any router with a WAN Ethernet port
- Ethernet cable to connect to NBN indoor unit
Available in regional areas. NBN installs the antenna and indoor unit - you just need a router.
Match Your Router to Your Plan
Your router's speed capability limits your actual internet speed. An older router can't deliver the speeds of a faster plan - you'll need to upgrade your equipment to get the most from higher-tier NBN services.
| Plan Speed | Minimum Router Requirement |
|---|---|
| Up to 100Mbps | 100Mbps (Fast Ethernet) WAN port - most routers from the last 10 years |
| 250Mbps - 1000Mbps | Gigabit (1GbE) WAN port - standard on most modern routers |
| Over 1000Mbps (1Gbps+) | 2.5 Gigabit (2.5GbE) WAN port required - newer routers only |
Important: A 2Gbps FTTP or HFC plan won't work through a standard gigabit port - you'll be limited to ~940Mbps. For ultrafast plans, ensure your router has a 2.5GbE WAN port, or connect via SFP+ if your router supports it.
Old routers can struggle even on slower plans. A router from 2015 might have gigabit ports but lack the processing power to handle modern traffic loads, NAT tables, or multiple devices. If you're experiencing slowdowns, buffering, or dropouts, your router's age might be the culprit - not your internet connection.
What to Look For
For most households, a mid-range WiFi 6 router from brands like TP-Link, ASUS, or Netgear will work well.
- WiFi 6 (802.11ax) or WiFi 7 support
- Gigabit or 2.5GbE WAN port (match to your plan)
- Dual-band or tri-band (2.4GHz + 5GHz + 6GHz)
- VDSL2 modem (for FTTN/FTTB only)
Larger homes may benefit from a mesh WiFi system. Need advice? Contact us and we'll help you choose.
10G Ethernet Equipment
Enterprise-grade connectivity requires enterprise-grade equipment. Here's what you need to get the most from your 10 Gigabit connection.
Enterprise Deployment
10G Ethernet is designed for businesses with serious bandwidth requirements. Our team will work with you during deployment to ensure your infrastructure can handle the connection. We can also recommend local IT partners if needed.
Network Interface
- Single-mode fibre optic termination (LC connectors)
- 10G SFP+ compatible network equipment
- SFP+ transceiver (provided by HyperConnect)
Router / Firewall
- Enterprise-grade firewall with 10Gbps+ throughput
- SFP+ port for 10G WAN connection
- Examples: Fortinet, Palo Alto, pfSense
Internal Network
- 10G capable switch(es) for backbone
- Cat6a or fibre internal cabling
- 10GbE NICs for servers/workstations
Typical 10G Deployments
Video Production
High-throughput storage arrays, editing suites, cloud rendering. Often using NVMe over Fabric.
Tech Companies
Development environments, CI/CD pipelines, cloud sync. Usually enterprise firewall with VLANs.
Data Centers
Colocation, cloud connectivity, disaster recovery. Full rack infrastructure.
